Hot 2014 trends in outdoor furnishings and design

A home’s outdoor space can take on the latest looks for 2014 with the addition of pieces reflecting the newest trends in outdoor/sun room furnishings. “Trends for 2014 highlight stylish selections ranging from tropical to traditional to custom-orderable designs”, said Chris Wilkin, assistant manager of the Morris Home Furnishings’ store at 2121 Harshman Road, Dayton.

Morris Home Furnishings has been helping Dayton, Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky residents furnish their homes since 1947. The expanded outdoor collection allows them to create outdoor or sun room furniture exactly as they want it with many custom options by choosing fabrics, metal colors and shades for wicker or wicker-like details for their selections – adding up to a look that reflects the owners’ sense of style. Everything Morris carries for outdoor living and sun rooms, such as sofas, is framed in aluminum so the pieces won’t rust and carry a 15-year warranty.

One seating design trend is the new “conversation” sofa that curves for easy chit-chats and is often part of a set complemented by chairs.

Bright, tropical tones for a beachy or Florida-influenced look to a more subdued, traditional palette mean buyers can decorate the way they want. Wilkin said he is seeing vibrant oranges, greens and reds alongside neutral beiges and grays. “Dozens of colors and fabric patterns made by Sumbrella and Outdura are available; all are sun-, stain- and water-resistant and withstand mold and mildew. Cushion and pillow cores are constructed with the same characteristics as the fabrics. Even when left out in the elements, they are dry in 20 minutes by simply turning them on their side”, he said.

According to the American Society of Landscape Architects, fire pits, fire bowls or outdoor fireplaces are the No. 1 requested design feature today.

“Fire pits are becoming a very popular trend,” Wilkin said. Sets range from a fire pit with a quartet of chairs for an easy, fun conversation area to a fire pit that can be converted into a dining table with chairs. “You can light the fire after dinner,” he said.
The fire pits use the same kind of propane that an outdoor grill would use. They also may be converted into using natural gas if the home has such a capability.

Throw pillows, patio umbrellas and even outdoor rugs by Surya can add loads of personality to a patio or outdoor space. The rugs may be ordered in any shape or size for a custom fit.

Although they are designed to withstand the elements, virtually every outdoor piece Morris sells may be protected by a cover. Patio tables featuring a hole in the center for an umbrella are no exception, and the umbrella may be covered, too. Wilkin’s final comment: “Everything (with few exceptions) we carry is already assembled and is ready to be enjoyed straight after delivery.”

Morris Home Furnishings has been Making Homes Great since 1947. You will find more selection, more style and more savings on outdoor/sun room furniture at the three stores located in Ohio and one in Kentucky.
